Name: Karin Koenig
Canon: Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Canon Point: Post-game, after leaving the Stone Platform.
Age: 25
History: Born in Munich, Karin is descended from a long line of Bavarian nobility, though by the time she came of age, they had long since fallen from grace. In an attempt to restore honor to the Koenig family name, she joined the German military, where she served for a number of years, working her way up to the rank of lieutenant. She went on to serve in the first World War, and was asked to lead troops into the small, quiet town of Domremy in France. While the town itself held no real strategic value, they were to be made an example of: their resistance would not be ignored, and so Karin was ordered to take the town by whatever means necessary.

The natives of Domremy had other ideas. As the German troops attempted to secure the church and the area surrounding, they were confronted by a creature known only as “the demon of Domremy,” a monstrous, winged beast that seemed to consider itself the town’s protector. The entirety of Karin’s regiment was slaughtered, with she herself incapacitated and nearly caught in the blast of a stray grenade that had been launched at the demon by one of her soldiers. Unable to move on her own, the demon itself shielded Karin from the blast, leaving her as the only survivor of the attack. The demon walked off, abandoning her in the church, but before he vanished completely, Karin saw him begin to shift forms, and saw that he not only possessed the body of a demon, but that of a man.

Karin returned to Luxembourg once she was able, explaining the situation to her commanding officer. Though her tale was met with some skepticism, Karin was a well-respected officer who had long been known for her honesty, andher commanding officer chose to give her the benefit of the doubt. He asked that she return to Domremy, though this time he wanted her to act as a guide. He then introduced her to Cardinal Nicolai Conrad, an exorcist from the Vatican, who planned to neutralize the demon that had seen fit to claim Domremy as his own. Nicolai and Karin traveled first to Apoina Tower near the Vatican, where Nicolai claimed he needed to retrieve a certain artifact that would play an important role in their battle against the demon.

Weeks later, they arrived in Domremy, though things did not exactly go as planned. When Karin and Nicolai reached the church, looking to call out the demon of Domremy, Karin was alarmed by the sounds of battle outside – again, it was the familiar sound of her own soldiers being slaughtered. Though she looked to Nicolai for answers, he silenced her, and proceeded to coax the demon out of hiding. He appeared moments later, and revealed his human form to be that of a young man, one that Nicolai was quick to name. The exorcist declared the demon to be Yuri Hyuga, “Godslayer,” a man that he had been tracking for months. To Karin’s surprise, he also revealed himself to be an agent of a secret society by the name of Sapientes Gladio. One of his underlings appeared shortly after, holding a struggling young girl by the name of Jeanne hostage, something that sparked a violent reaction in Yuri, who truly considered himself the town’s protector.

Karin was quick to change sides, appalled as Nicolai informed them that as they spoke, his men were laying waste to both Karin’s soldiers and the civilians. She shot at the man holding Jeanne in an attempt to free her, causing Nicolai to react by trying to strike her down, though Yuri took the blow. Nicolai used the Holy Mistletoe, the artifact he had claimed from Apoina Tower, to afflict Yuri with a curse that would slowly eat away at his soul, eventually leaving him a hollowed-out husk of a human being. Only after making a remark about his disappointment in Karin did Nicolai and his men depart, leaving Yuri for dead, though Karin remained by his side.

Unsure of exactly what to think or feel after the betrayal and still reeling from her realization that demons were not just monsters in stories, Karin chose to accompany Yuri in his attempt to find a cure for the curse that Nicolai had bestowed upon him. Their search took them and the companions they would meet along the way on a whirlwind trip across Europe, eventually leading them to Russia, where they joined forces with the young but precocious Princess Anastasia Romanov to defeat Grigori Rasputin, who had been revealed as the leader of Sapientes Gladio.

Throughout their travels, Karin found herself falling for Yuri, though after a time she was forced to accept that though she believed he felt something for her, as well, that she would always be second-best: he would never be able to move past his love of Alice, a girl who had given her life for him the previous year. Even though she accepted that he would not truly love her in return, she still wanted to stay close and help him see this curse through to the end, whether they were able to find a cure or not. On more than one occasion, Nicolai attempted to lure Karin to his side of the conflict, trying to manipulate her with promises of love and affection, the likes of which she would never receive from Yuri himself. Karin turned her back on him, but even after the defeat of Rasputin, it became clear that Nicolai’s own goals were much grander than those of Sapientes Gladio, and they were forced to follow him to Japan.

Once in Japan, Karin, Yuri and company found themselves tangled up with the Japanese government as they searched for Special Agent Masaji Kato, a friend of Yuri’s from his Shanghai days. Karin concealed her German heritage during their stay there per Anastasia’s suggestion, and did so by carrying travel papers that had been put together by the princess herself, declaring that Karin was a Russian native by the name of “Anne.” Yuri commented, fondly, that Anne had been his mother’s name.

As they continued to travel through Japan, working to uncover the rapidly unraveling plot triggered by Kato and Nicolai’s involvement with each other, Karin later met Yuri’s aunt, a seer by the name of Saki Inugami. Saki seemed to have a startling awareness of both Yuri and Karin’s destinies, and she later pulled Karin aside to speak privately, offering her an old, faded picture of Yuri with his parents and claiming that she thought it would be nice for Karin to see “what Yuri looked like when he was young.” Karin, however, was shocked when she realized that she, herself, was the woman in the picture. Turning it over, she found that the back read “Jinpachiro, Anne, and three-year-old Yuri.” She has carried this photo on her person ever since, struggling to come to grips with what it implies.

Kato’s experimentation and attempts to harness the power of life and death for his own eventually failed, ending once and for all when Nicolai killed Ouka, a replica of Kato’s lost love who threw herself on the blade that was meant for him. Kato killed Nicolai in turn and asked Yuri and the others to meet him at the Asuka Stone Platform, where he informed them that though they had been friends in the past, he and Yuri were now enemies. His intent was to use what he had learned of magic to fragment time and go back one thousand years, to change the course of history and make the world what he thought it should be, deeming the present dismal and unnecessarily cruel. He told Yuri he expected his former friend to try and stop him, welcoming the confrontation, and when Yuri went to do so, Karin went with him, as did the rest of their allies. They were told by Kato that should they defeat him, they should all wish for the world they wanted most – followed by his taking the form of Susano-O, which they were forced to defeat.

Despite emerging victorious and stopping the spell’s effect from spreading and unmaking the world as they knew it, Yuri, Karin and all the rest were caught at its center, and the spell proceeded to scatter them across time. Karin was the last to be carried away from the platform, having just enough time to say her goodbyes to Yuri, smiling as he thanked her for all she’d done before the spell forcibly tore them apart, reaching for each others’ hands as they slipped away. Karin was later found unconscious beneath a tree by a young Jinpachiro Hyuga, more than twenty-five years in the past, with nothing to identify her but the false travel papers given to her by Anastasia and the curious photo given to her by Saki, which Jinpachiro himself picked up and puzzled over before Karin began to stir. This is the cause of Shadow Hearts’ predestination paradox, putting Karin in a position to become Yuri’s mother before dying a handful of years later as Anne, only to be born elsewhere in the world to grow up and befriend Yuri as Karin.

Personality: Since her family is considered fallen nobility, Karin has always felt as though she has a great deal to prove. She spent her years in the military working hard to bring honor back to her family’s name, and to prove that she was an independent woman who lived up to the great expectations that came with being born a Koenig. She considers herself bound to do what she feels is her duty, and though this once meant that she was willing to serve her country at all costs, her definition of duty has since changed, especially after seeing the innocent residents of Domremy slaughtered during what was intended to be a military operation. Though the members of Sapientes Gladio were responsible for the massacre, she could not forget that the initial orders to gain control of the town itself had been given to her, and that the townspeople had done nothing to deserve being slain in a display of military might. She now considers it her duty to abide by her strong sense of justice, sometimes going so far as to overcompensate for her past deeds as a member of the German military by acting recklessly in the interest of a noble cause. She tries her utmost to be honest, and places great importance on fulfilling her promises.

Until recently, Karin has never truly allowed herself to invest in personal relationships, having devoted so much of her time to trying to climb ranks in the military on her own merits. She did everything she could to avoid being seen as vulnerable in any way, but thanks to all those years without deep friendship or any real kind of affection, she has come to crave it. Though she cannot bring herself to admit it openly, more than anything, she wants to be loved and accepted for who she is, rather than merely respected for her military prowess. Family was was the only exception to these efforts, and she was especially close to her grandmother, though Karin is now the only surviving member of the Koenig family.

Fortunately, times have changed, and so has she. As she traveled with Yuri and the others, Karin began to open up considerably, and became known for her warmth and compassion as well as intense stubbornness. She also showed that despite all of her experience with strategic planning, she could be extremely reckless in the heat of the moment, especially when emotionally invested in a situation. Since abandoning the military, she has not guarded her emotions as closely as she once did, and instead allows them to fuel her passion to fight for what she believes is a just cause. She is a woman who sticks to her convictions, and once she’s made up her mind about something, good luck getting her to change it. She is not someone who is easily swayed, and when pushed, she pushes back just as hard, insistent on standing her ground. For better or for worse, she always tries to have the last word.

That stubbornness of hers is persistent, and despite her kind heart, it can make forgiveness difficult. She takes betrayal very personally, particularly in the case of Nicolai. Though they had only known each other for a handful of weeks, they had spent a great deal of time alone in each other’s company while travelling. He had shown himself to be kind, thoughtful, and intelligent, attempting to manipulate and ensnare her with his charms. Even worse, it worked, which made his revealing his true colors in Domremy cut even deeper. She deeply resents those who try to manipulate or prey on others, and has difficulty finding it within herself to forgive those particular transgressions.Over the past several months, she has become a far more shrewd judge of character, less trusting than she once was— if nothing else, her time spent with Nicolai taught her that nice is different than good. While she makes an effort to be open-minded and sympathetic to others, taking their perspective into consideration, it's difficult for her to look past wounds that still sting.

At her core, however, Karin is a kind person. As she starts to develop personal relationships throughout the story, we see her become considerably warmer, always eager to lend an ear to any of her companions who may need one. Though she worked hard to keep herself isolated and focused during her military years, she never turned a completely blind eye to her emotions, and though she seems surprised when the other party members first show an interest in becoming friends rather than allies of convenience, there's a definite sense of relief there, as well. She is both compassionate and understanding, and has proven herself to be a loyal friend time and time again since joining forces with Yuri. Though some might assume that her history as a soldier means she’s straight-laced and humorless, she’s actually quite the opposite. Once comfortable with someone, Karin reveals herself to be both friendly and playful, and isn’t at all shy about teasing someone once she considers them a friend. Yuri is on the receiving end of this, more often than not, but it's always affectionate. Towards the rest of their party members, her affection is almost motherly at times, and she feels responsible for both the physical and emotional well-being of the people who have chosen to fight alongside her.

Above all else, Karin is extremely resilient, and her strength of spirit is to be commended. Life has never been easy for her, and that certainly didn’t change upon meeting Yuri. No matter how difficult things become, she perseveres. No matter how strange the turn of events seems to be, Karin adapts. Even when dealt a potentially crushing blow, such as learning that Yuri would never be able to see beyond Alice long enough to return her own feelings of love for him, Karin continues on, attempting to be a graceful loser and picking herself right back up again. At every given opportunity, she refuses to allow herself to be defeated, however she might feel otherwise. She will always choose the good of others over her own self-interest. Even at the very end, when the final battle is won and those who emerged victorious are given the opportunity to pursue their own happy endings, she chooses a path that she knows will end horribly for her, and all too soon— knowing that if she does not, Yuri will never be born, leaving the world without the Godslayer to defend it. She is a woman who finds herself presented with defeat, denial and hard choices at almost every turn, but Karin never allows herself to choose what is easy— instead, she always does whatever she can to do what she thinks is right, regardless of what it costs her.

Abilities & Skills: Karin is proficient with the use of swords, primarily sabers and rapiers, as well as having some respectable ability with crests (which allow the user to cast spells otherwise unavailable to them), though it pales in comparison to the power displayed by her more magic-oriented companions. She is a well-balanced fighter, and has the ability to adapt well to almost any situation. As a former military officer, she has some experience with firearms, as well as a good head for military tactics. Her combat style is practiced, technical and disciplined. Many of her signature sword skills are based on Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, inspired by the stage directions written in each segment of the score. Under normal circumstances, she is able to imbue her blade with fire magic, though that ability will no longer be available to her here.

Inventory:
  • A cross worn around her neck, given to her by Yuri.
  • This photograph.
  • Her sword, Durandal.
  • A small bag of curative items, mostly seeds and roots.

  • Choice: Monster/Harpy
Reason: Harpy feels like a natural choice for Karin because of her links to phoenix symbolism in canon, with her most powerful sword attack allowing her to summon a phoenix to attack her foes, as well as her character being fated to find herself trapped in a cycle of dying only to be reborn elsewhere in the world to serve a particular purpose and help Yuri achieve his destiny. In addition, her combat style is graceful, agile, and incorporates a number of aerial attacks, so a Harpy's natural abilities will work well alongside her existing talents.
